UNION TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Police are investigating a racist letter that was sent to a Black-owned yarn store in Union Township.

Beyond Yarn posted a picture of the letter to its Instagram page on Saturday.

“I cannot support your business due to the fact that BLM destroyed my business in 2020. I hope you fail,” read the unsigned letter. “Black People f**k up everything.”

The store’s Instagram page responded online.

“To this person who mailed this spiteful, racist and wholly unacceptable message, we say thank you but your business and those who share these derogatory views are not welcomed in our community,” wrote the store. “This letter has unfortunately made our community feel unsafe at the place many call their home away from home. We will do everything in our power to ensure a safe environment can continue at Beyond Yarn including reaching out to the proper authorities so they are aware of the situation.”

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office told NJ.com that police are investigating the letter.

The store, which is owned by Theresa Macklin, is the only Black-owned local yarn shop in Central Jersey, according to a GoFundMe started in January to help with pandemic recovery.

The campaign has raised over $20,000 of its $45,000 goal as of Friday.
